Superintendent's Corner
by Alan Mealka

TSD’s Superintendent Alan Mealka had some exciting news to share in a recent interview. The design stage for the new high school has been funded! Bill Blankenship (father of TSD alumni Katie Blankenship- Class of 2001) has been chosen as the architect. Teachers and students are in the process of being surveyed to gain their input on wants and needs for the new facility. The new high school will be located where the current Poore Hall is now standing. Plans will include the creation of a quadrangle design that will give the campus more of an identity. The same old Colonial style of Ward Building and the Old Gym will be used. More information will be published in upcoming editions of the Tennessee Observer.

Over the years there had been much discussion to include exterior artwork on our already beautiful campus. After the tragic loss of one of our precious students, Marie Wooten, it was decided that a bronze statue would be a perfect way to memorialize her. A child-oriented statue that embodied learning and schoolwork was chosen. This statue is located in front of the Central Dining Hall. The sculpture is entitled “Two Kids on a Bench” by Max Turner.

A second statue was purchased with funds donated in honor of Helen Lambert Snead by her family and friends. Helen’s sister, Hazel Irene Lambert, attended TSD and was in the class of 1926. Helen was fond of TSD for that reason. A dedication ceremony will take place later this spring and will include a memorial plaque. The title of this work is “Break Time” by Paul Anderson, depicting two young children enjoying nature and a good book.

A third sculpture is to be added soon in front of Ward Building. TSD employee Helen Williford has purchased this statue. Helen has worked at TSD for over 45 years. Helen’s statue is called “Girl Reading with Cat”. The inscription will read, “Donated by Helen F. Williford, Administrative Secretary 1961-2006. This sculpture will be located on the right of the steps leading up to Ward Building.

Our campus is truly becoming a work of art! Plans are to add more sculptures to the Middle School and the Clinic in the near future.
