A Snow Ball

Payden Green and Katie Wilson were crowned King and Queen
of the 2007 Snow Ball.

Starting this school year the students in the middle school only knew one definition for the word “ball”. After December 19th they not only knew another definition for the word but they had the experience to go with it! The Snow Ball, the middle school’s version of a formal dance, was held the afternoon of December 19th. The day was filled with the excitement and magic that you can only get from girls in fancy dresses, boys in shirts and ties, tiaras, sparkling lights, glittering decorations, and a teenager’s first formal dance.

The dance was not just about learning new vocabulary. For weeks before the dance students learned about the difference between casual and formal dress and behaviors. Different students participated in the plans for the Snow Ball from the invitations, the decorations, the menu, set up and clean up! They learned about planning, deadlines, communication, leadership and all that is required to have a dance.

Reiko Pearson was the student leader for the dance. Mark Hamrick, Middle School Art Teacher, lent his talents and expertise by helping the students create hundreds of beautiful paper snow flakes and a snowy scene for the backdrop that would be used for the pictures. Adam Parker, Student Living Department, set up the sound system and stayed to be the DJ. Bethany Hickman, former TSD student, and her brother Robert came and taught the students ballroom dancing!

The students wanted to have a queen and king for the dance. Students decided on the personal qualities the royal couple should have and a ballot was created. The Snow Queen was to be sweet, kind, friendly, civil, mature and willing to serve others. The Snow King was to be strong, compassionate, friendly, mature, civil, and thoughtful. Near the end of the dance the Snow Queen and Snow King were announced. Katie Wilson was crowned as the Snow Queen and Payden Green was crowned the Snow King.

Students and staff had a ball (blast) at the Snow Ball (formal dance).
