Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day of Service Food Drive
Catie Blackwood and Karen Simmons talk to the WBIR-TV reporters.
This year TSD celebrated Martin Luther King Day with our second annual food drive. TSD staff and students placed boxes around campus for donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Your response set a new record!
Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee began operations in 1982. Hunger strikes one out of every seven East Tennesseans. For nearly 245,000 people, the local soup kitchen or food pantry may be the only thing standing between them and the pain of hunger. Second Harvest distributes food to roughly 125,000 hungry people every month through a network of Partner Agencies throughout East Tennessee.
On Monday, January 21, we met in the auditorium to honor Dr. King. John Bell from Second Harvest came to TSD and told us about his agency. TSD then presented Mr. Bell with the food we collected. After the program, MLK Committee Co-Chairs Catie Blackwood and Karen Simmons were interviewed by WBIR TV to share information about TSD’s Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our students and staff collected peanut butter; soup; canned meats, fruits and vegetables and other non-perishable items. Last year we collected over 500 food items. This year saw an increase to 595 pounds of food! Thanks to everyone for your generosity and hard work.
