POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
COOK 1 NE

SUMMARY/DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:
Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of volume cooking duties of routine difficulty; and performs related work as required.
This is the entry working class in Cook sub series. An employee in this class performs a variety of volume cooking duties on an assigned shift in an institution or restaurant. This class differs from that of Cook 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for leading Cooks 1 and other kitchen workers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs a variety of cooking duties such as cleaning and preparing fruits and vegetables; making salads, sauces, gravy, and soups; roasting, broiling, and baking meats; frying meat and vegetables; fixing beverages.
  2. Operates a variety of kitchen appliances such as food slicer, food chopper, mixers, deep fat fryer, pressure cooker, steamer, and microwave oven
  3. Assists in cleaning kitchen, planning menus and special diets, ordering food supplies, and loading food trays for delivery.
  4. May bake bread and desserts.
  5. May help serve food.
  6. May take inventory of supplies.
  7. May help train less experienced workers in cooking related work.
  8. As part of your duties, you may be required to mentor a TSD student in the TSD Work Based Learning Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A valid State of Tennessee driver’s license is required when driving a state vehicle. Good knowledge of health and safety precautions to be taken at work; some knowledge of volume cooking and methods/materials/equipment; some knowledge of reading/writing/math sufficient to follow recipes.

Education and Experience: Experience equivalent to one year of fulltime volume food service work which included preparation of food. Applicant must become proficient in sign language at the level established for this position within the Tennessee School for the Deaf Sign Communication Program as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment instrument. Training will be provided.

The applicant selected for this position will be fingerprinted and required to have a TBI/FBI background check. In addition, background checks will be conducted through the Tennessee Registry of Sexual Offenders, Tennessee Registry of Abusers, and the Tennessee Child Protective Services Background Check.

STARTING SALARY AND BENEFITS: $1,399 - $2,237 per month for 12 months.

The State makes available to the employee medical insurance (health, dental, vision), life insurance, retirement, matching 401(K), annual leave and sick leave PTO, education waiver, sick leave bank, and Employee Assistance Program.
